What Is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is a Japanese word that can be translated
as Universal Life Force Energy. It is a powerful hands-on energy balancing
technique for relaxation, pain relief and healing through a gentle laying on
of hands. A Reiki practitioner’s hands focus the Reiki energy by placing
them on the body. At the same time, Reiki energy flows to heal the
whole person. Reiki can also be given to animals and plants or used to bless
events. Reiki is often given to complement (not replace) traditional medicine,
and it complements any method of alternative healing.

Reiki can do no harm.
A Reiki practitioner does not store Reiki energy in her body or use her
own energy in giving Reiki. Reiki flows through the practitioner as a pure,
balanced energy that cannot be affected by the giver or the receiver.
Reiki always seeks the highest good of the receiver.

As with healing prayer, it is impossible to force Reiki to heal the body.
That decision is in God’s hands. However, Reiki may heal the body
-- sometimes immediately, often by accelerating the healing process --
while it also works to heal the heart, the mind, and the emotions.

How is all this possible if Reiki is not a spiritual energy from outside
the practitioner but yet is not the energy or power of the practitioner?
First, it is important to understand that everything is basically energy
and every person has an energy field that is affected by life events.
After several years of reading quantum physics and studying various
energy healing modalities, I am convinced that a Reiki practitioner
connects to a huge energy field -- perhaps the energy field of the
planet, perhaps an even larger universal field -- that is balanced and
powerful enough to bring people who connect to it also into balance.
Learning Reiki is learning to recognize the healing frequencies and
be able to "tune in" to those frequencies at will. This is a simplistic
description of the process, and I hope to have a fuller one up soon.

Some people choose to receive Reiki as needed to relieve stress and
fatigue through the peaceful relaxation it offers. They may choose Reiki
to accelerate healing and treat the pain from an injury, illness or surgery.
Some people choose to receive Reiki regularly to help with ongoing physical
or emotional issues. Reiki is an effective complementary support to
medical and psychological treatment.
